1. Lake Ohrid, North Macedonia

A hidden gem in the Balkans, Lake Ohrid is PERFECT for nature lovers and history buffs. It’s one of Europe’s deepest and oldest lakes, with a history that stretches back millions of years. We are talking about archaeological sites dating back to the prehistoric era. Yep, that’s correct!

Given its history, Ohrid is a cultural hub with rich heritage that is often embodied in its ancient churches, monasteries, and Ottoman-era architecture. Now talking about monasteries, one of the must-do activities at Lake Ohrid is to visit the Monastery of Saint Naum. This monastery, founded in the 10th century by Saint Naum of Ohrid, is an important religious site that offers breathtaking views of the lake.

Clearly this is a location for all of those seeking a peaceful retreat at a low cost. Sounds like it’s time to ditch Lake Como and instead visit Lake Ohrid!

2. Valparaíso, Chile

This colorful port city is a haven for artists and students alike. It’s a unique blend of culture and seaside relaxation that embodies the spirit of artistic expression and has a distinct personality that sets it apart from other destinations.

The city is built upon dozens of steep hills, leading to its nickname “The Jewel of the Pacific.” These hills are lined with narrow, winding streets and alleyways, offering stunning views of the city and the sea. Think of it like a cousin to the beloved city of San Francisco.

One of the best activities in Valparaíso is to explore the Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción areas. These hills are the most iconic parts of the city, known for their picturesque streets, colorful buildings, and stunning murals. It’s like you’re in an open air museum, witnessing the creativity and spirit of its residents.

One of the most unique activities in Plovdiv is not just visiting the ancient Roman Theater but also attending a live performance there. Built in the 1st century AD during the reign of Emperor Trajan, this amphitheater is one of the best-preserved ancient theaters in the world! 7. Kotor, Montenegro

Tucked along the Adriatic coast, Kotor is famed for its stunning bay, architecture, and affordable seafood. It’s a quieter alternative to the bustling Mediterranean hotspots (you know which ones), and perfect for budget travelers like you.

I know we’ve said this about a lot of the locations on this list, but Kotor is a stunningly beautiful town known for its well-preserved medieval architecture and dramatic mountainous backdrop. Plus because Kotor’s Old Town is a labyrinth of cobbled streets and squares, it is filled with new things to discover at every turn. Seriously!

One of the most rewarding and unique activities in Kotor is hiking up to the Fortress of Kotor. The fortress was part of Kotor’s fortification system dating back to the 9th century. But now it is a landmark that offers breathtaking views. For this, we recommend starting early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the midday heat. Ready, set, hike!

8. Tbilisi, Georgia

Offering a mix of modern and traditional. With its hot springs and delicious food, Tbilisi is the destination we recommend for those looking to lounge and take it slow this spring break.

Tbilisi is famous for its sulfur bath houses located in the Abanotubani district. These bath houses are an integral part of Tbilisi’s identity and offer a unique experience, with some bath houses dating back to the Persian era.

Aside from relaxing, one activity we recommend is to explore Old Town and then take a cable car to Narikala Fortress. The ancient fortress dates back to the 4th century and offers some of the best views of the city. Check and check!

One unique and significant activity in Sarajevo is visiting the Tunnel of Hope, also known as the Sarajevo War Tunnel. This historic tunnel was a lifeline for the city during the Siege of Sarajevo in the Bosnian War.
