Professionalism in a New Culture

Starting a new study abroad program? Accepted into that international internship? A new experience can be really daunting and adding a culture shock can make a transition even more overwhelming. However, do not worry as there are many things you can prepare for and expect on your time abroad. Here are some key points to keep in mind when working in a new country.

First Impressions are Everything!

What does a good first impression look like where you are going? In some workplaces a hug or a handshake might be what is expected. However, in some places that might be too frank and even considered inappropriate like in Middle Eastern countries handshakes between members of the opposite gender may be considered inappropriate.  Do the research beforehand and work on mirroring your colleagues when you meet them!

Before arriving in your new host country, it is important to do some research about the work culture and etiquette. It’s important to understand what professionalism may mean in your new office. For example, in France and Spain, lunch breaks are typically long and may involve having a glass of wine or a drink. However, in the Netherlands, lunch is typically a quick affair with just a cold sandwich.

Network, network, network!

Building relationships is important not just socially, but also professionally and can help you receive future letters of recommendations! Make time to meet people on your team if you are working. Make time to grab a meal with your colleagues, classmates, and professors. This will create relationships that last beyond your time abroad. In France for instance, they typically take long lunches, which is a good time to connect with your colleagues as they will see you as more of a team player.

Communicate and Advocate for Yourself!

You might be out of your element because it is a new environment and culture. However, that does not mean you should shy away from advocating for yourself. If you are there for an internship, be sure to communicate the boundaries that may be associated with your role. If you are a student do not be afraid to ask questions if a lesson or assignment seems confusing. Cross-cultural communication can be difficult. In the US, we are used to small talk, but in many European countries like the Netherlands and Germany, small talk is perceived as strange. This may have you adjust some of your communication styles and advocacy methods so you can make sure you are heard.
