Rarotonga

Starting off the only way we know how, Rarotonga is a hidden gem that offers a laid back vibe with a side of spectacular views and pure relaxation. This small but accessible island offers a variety of activities that can fit a college budget while still feeling luxurious.

Getting to Rarotonga is pretty straightforward and with our exclusive deals for college students like you, flights should be the last thing you need to worry about. When it comes to accommodations, you can skip the resorts and opt for charming guesthouses or beachside bungalows. These offer an authentic experience at a fraction of the cost. Plus, many have kitchens, which can help save on food expenses.

Activities on a Budget!

  • Take a Dip All Day Long: The island is surrounded by beautiful lagoons that are perfect for having a lazy day by the water. We know that mom’s ideal vacation includes a day full of lounging, and a massage here and there, so you’re halfway there.

  • Hiking: Set out for adventure and make a cross island trek to explore the famous Needle Rock. Now that’s a good way to spend a day without spending money!

  • Cultural Experiences: Look into attending Island Night, where guests can enjoy performances hosted by hotels and cultural villages that showcase the rich heritage of the Cook Islands through dances, energetic drum beats, and traditional songs in Maori.

  • Local Eateries: Visit the vibrant Punanga Nui Market to sample local foods, and browse handicrafts. The meals here are affordable and delicious so be sure to try traditional dishes like Ika Mata or any local seafood dish.

Samoa

Known for its incredible hospitality and amazing views, Samoa is another place that will not disappoint your mom or anyone who visits. Made up of two main islands, Upolu and Savai’i, you’ll have options to make sure your trip stays within your budget.

For accommodations, we recommend staying in beach fales (traditional Samoan huts). These fales are usually simple, with communal facilities, and can be found right on the beach. You can save the hotel stay for another time.

Activities on a Budget!

  • Take her to the Sua Ocean Trench: Although there’s a small fee to enter, this stunning natural swimming hole with crystal waters is a must visit and well worth the price. After all, it does look like something out of a fantasy movie and you wouldn’t want mom to miss that, would you?

  • Waterfalls and Beaches: Samoa is dotted with a bunch of waterfalls and beaches. Togitogiga Waterfall, for example, is a great place for a picnic and a swim. That screams vacation to us!

  • Hiking Trails: Explore trails that offer scenic views and encounters with local wildlife. Depending on your level, there are easy trails like the Togitogiga Waterfall Trail like the one we just mentioned to the more challenging ones like Mount Vaea Scenic Reserve. Each a great option to take in the island’s natural beauty without any cost.

Fiji

Fiji is like no other, with its pristine beaches, friendly locals, and beautiful traditions it will leave you feeling as if you came back from a serene dream. It’s a perfect choice for college students looking to give their moms a memorable yet budget-friendly vacation. And with over 300 islands to explore, there’s truly no excuse to not have a good time full of adventure and relaxation.

To keep costs down, check out our flight deals and consider traveling in the off seasons, which are anytime from November to April. And of course, for accommodations, instead of high-end resorts, look into smaller hotels, or guesthouses, which can offer stays at a fraction of the cost.

Activities on a Budget!

  • Island Hopping: In case you didn’t know, the beaches in Fiji are public and free. Meaning they are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and snorkeling right off the shore. Plus with so many small islands close by, taking a day trip to some of the smaller, less commercialized islands around Fiji is a great way to access more secluded beaches without a hefty price tag.

  • Visit Historical Sites: No trip is complete without being a little bit of a tourist, so why not explore Fiji’s historical sites such as the Tavuni Hill Fort, a prehistoric location where you can learn all about Fiji’s tribal warfare history.

  • Cooking Classes: Bond even more with mom by participating in a Fijian cooking class where you can learn how to make traditional dishes such as kokoda (Fijian ceviche) and Cassava Cake. Yum!

  • Zip-lining: If your mom is a daredevil just like you and is up for a bit of adventure, go zip-lining through Fiji’s tropical forests. We promise you’ll be talking about this experience for years to come!

Bora Bora

Last but not least, Bora Bora! Although one of the more pricey locations on this list, taking your mom to Bora Bora on a college budget might require some extra planning and creativity, BUT we promise it’s possible.

For instance, instead of splurging on an overwater bungalow, consider staying in more affordable lodges or guesthouses on the main island (similar to other locations). You can save a good amount and still have easy access to the beaches and activities Bora Bora is famous for. Activities like treating her to a spa day or a fancy dinner under the stars. Table for two please!

Activities on a Budget!

Now because Bora Bora’s natural beauty is its biggest draw, many of the best experiences don’t require a large investment.

  • Beach Days: Spend your days relaxing on Matira Beach, the only public beach on the main island. It’s free, beautiful, and perfect for lounging.

  • Snorkeling: Ditch the expensive guided tour and instead rent snorkel gear to explore the coral gardens close to the shore at your own pace.

  • Hiking: Take a hike up Mount Pahia to get a breathtaking view of the island. Just beware, it’s a challenging route, so take comfortable shoes and be prepared for a good workout with views.

  • Visit Local Markets: Stroll through Vaitape, the main town, and visit local markets to sample Polynesian food and take in all the crafts. It’s an inexpensive way to enjoy the local gastronomy and pick up some souvenirs for the entire family. Check, and check!

If this hasn’t convinced you that the South Pacific islands have some of the best destinations for spoiling your mom, then we don’t know what will. And whether she’s into relaxation or cultural experiences, we are confident one of these locations will make her feel super special and get you closer to becoming the favorite child (we all know they have one).

Time to start planning that surprise trip, and to kickstart it, let’s get you saving some money on flights with our exclusive deals. Look at you making it look so easy!

We can’t wait until you unwind and bond with your #1 and surprise her this Mother’s day!
