Move over Valentine’s Day, because the real MVP of February is Galentine’s Day! Officially coined by Leslie Knope (aka our waffle-loving queen from Parks and Rec), Galentine’s falls on February 13th, and it’s all about celebrating friendship and embodying main character energy. Let’s be real, college budgets don’t exactly scream “luxury spa weekend in the Maldives.” BUT the good news is that you don’t need to drop serious cash to have an unforgettable time with your ride-or-dies.
If you and your BFFs are itching for a mini getaway, here are three budget-friendly destinations that will make your social feeds pop. Plus, we’ve got all the tips on how to save big while making memories worth a million bucks. You’re welcome!

1. Tulum, Mexico
Tulum is like that effortlessly cool girl who always looks good in candid photos regardless of whether or not she knows her picture is being taken. Picture white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, and cenotes (which are natural sinkholes that are basically nature’s swimming pools!) BUT without the Bali price tag. And contrary to what you may believe, Tulum can be done on a budget if you plan wisely.
How to make it happen:
- Flights: Book your flights early! We offer great prices from the U.S. to Cancún that can help you save money to spend where it really matters. Once in Cancun, hop on a bus to Tulum for around $15-$20 and boom you’re there.
- Accommodations: Instead of a beachfront resort, book an Airbnb or hostel in Tulum town. We hear options start at $20 a night per person. Not bad!
- Eat Like a Local: Skip the overpriced restaurants and hit up local taco stands. You can never go wrong with tacos.
- Free Activities: Relax at Playa Paraíso (a public beach), visit the Tulum Ruins (only $5), or swim in cenotes like Gran Cenote for a fun-filled weekend all under $100.

2. Montreal, Canada
If you want Paris vibes without selling your left arm, Montreal is the answer! With cobblestone streets, cozy cafés, and French-speaking locals, it’s the perfect weekend winter escape for a cozy Galentine’s adventure that feels like you flew across the pond but without the 7+ hour flight—c’est magnifique!
How to make it happen:
- Flights: Major U.S. cities like New York, Chicago, and Boston offer budget flights to Montreal. Check out our exclusive flight deals, and when booking if the schedule permits, fly in on a Tuesday or Wednesday for the most affordable options.
- Accommodations: Check out affordable boutique hostels like M Montreal, where dorm beds start at $30 a night and come with free breakfast. OKAY!
- Cheap Eats: Visit local shops for a quick bite or warm up with a classic bagel that will keep you running all day long.
- Free Activities: Explore Old Montreal’s historic streets and get as many photos as your heart desires, window shop at Jean-Talon Market, or take a scenic (and free!) walk up Mount Royal for the best city views.

3. Puerto Rico
Stay domestic by visiting one of our favorite islands. Puerto Rico is the secret for a tropical getaway where flights are cheap and no passport is needed. It’s the perfect place to sip piña coladas, soak up the sun, and dance the night away with your girls.
How to make it happen:
- Flights: Book ahead of time and try to leave from a major city—sometimes fares can be super cheap like our student only flight deals!
- Accommodations: Split an Airbnb in Old San Juan for as little as $30 per person per night. If sharing a bed is not the ultimate friendship experience then we don’t know what is.
- Meals: Eat at lechoneras (local roast pork spots) for a meal under $10. Of course, a must try is their mofongo, Puerto Rico’s signature dish. Yum!
- Free Activities: Beach hop between Condado, Ocean Park, and Flamenco Beach (one of the most beautiful beaches in the world!). And if you are feeling adventurous, explore El Yunque Rainforest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System.
Galentine’s Day is all about celebrating the friendships that keep you sane, hyped, and thriving. Whether you’re sipping margaritas in Tulum, pretending you’re in Paris in Montreal, or living your best life in Puerto Rico, you can do it all without breaking the bank. And if a trip isn’t in the cards this year, no worries! A DIY spa day, a movie marathon, or a picnic in the park can be just as iconic.
Now, go forth and plan the ultimate Galentine’s getaway because your besties and YOU deserve it!
