You’ve been seeing the reels, saving the TikToks, adding things to a Pinterest board you’ll never look at again (no judgement…because we do that too) but the second it’s time to actually plan the trip, something always happens. Suddenly sorting out flights, accommodation, itineraries, and travel insurance feels like a second job. And it leaves you feeling so overwhelmed you just avoid it, again.
We get it, but planning a trip in 2026 requires less effort than ever before, and if you’re still doing it the hard way, you’re leaving transformative experiences on the table. So to help make your next trip happen, we’ve put together a quick guide for easy adventure without the dizzying spreadsheet.

Let AI Do the Heavy Lifting
Before you open a single tab, open ChatGPT, Claude, or whatever AI you already have on your phone and tell it your budget, your vibe, how many days you have, and what you’re into. Ask it to build you a rough itinerary where it compares two destinations you’ve been thinking about, make sure you tell it to keep in mind what time of year is cheapest to fly somewhere, and of course what neighborhoods to stay in, what to skip, and what locals actually do so you have a unique experience.
The output won’t be perfect, but it gives you a starting point in about 45 seconds instead of two hours of browser tabs. From there you’re editing and building an itinerary that gets you excited, not building from scratch, which is a completely different mental lift.
Let TikTok Be a Travel Guide
Now that you have a first draft to your itinerary, it’s time to add a little more you. What we recommend is searching your destination on TikTok. The algorithm has already curated thousands of first person student budget friendly videos from people who were literally just there. You’ll hear about “Hidden gems in Lisbon,” “what I wish I knew before going to Thailand,” “48 hours in Mexico City on a budget,” coming from students like you. And it takes 20-30 minutes to absorb what would take hours to read.
Save the videos that resonate into a dedicated TikTok collection for your trip. By the time you land you’ll have a mental map of the city and where you’ll want to do your experiences, which is infinitely more useful than pulling up an old school paper guide.

Use Google Maps as Your Itinerary
Now talking about maps, here’s a planning hack that sounds too simple to be real and that is to drop everything you might want to do in your destination into a Google Maps list before you go. Restaurants, viewpoints, trails, markets, coffee shops, all of it. Then when you’re actually there, open the map, see what’s close to where you are, and just start walking toward things.
This replaces a rigid hour by hour itinerary with something that feels spontaneous but is actually loosely organized. And because you already did the work beforehand now you know that whatever is close to you is something you’ll enjoy doing, now that’s what we call being a free spirit without travel anxiety!
If all Else Fails, Consider Reddit
Now if you are someone that likes to get the local scoop, before any trip, search your destination in Reddit, specifically the r/solotravel, r/travel, or destination specific subreddits. Search “mistakes,” “wish I knew,” or “first time” and read the threads. Here you’ll get real traveler’s brutally honest feedback about what’s overhyped, what’s underrated, and what will quietly ruin your trip if nobody tells you first.
This takes 20-30 minutes and saves you from the three most common tourist mistakes in any given city. It’s the closest thing to having a well traveled friend who’s already been where you’re going and wants to share it all. Thank god for the internet!

Book the Flight First
This is the most counterintuitive tip and also the most important one… stop waiting until everything is perfectly planned before you book your flight. Book the flight first. Having a confirmed departure date does more for your planning motivation than any app ever could, suddenly the trip is real, the countdown starts, and your brain shifts from “someday” to “okay I actually need to figure this out.”
The accommodation, the activities, the packing all of it gets easier once the flight is locked in. And if finding the right flight at the right price is the thing standing between you and hitting confirm, that’s exactly where ScholarTrip comes in! Built for college students like you, it does the flight finding so the only thing left to do is book it and start the countdown.
