This past summer, I spent an entire month exploring Italy, and honestly, it was one of the best experiences of my life. Every corner of the country felt like stepping into a different world. From wandering through ancient cities filled with history and charm to hiking through breathtaking mountain landscapes that didn’t even feel real. Each day brought something new and unforgettable, like living inside a movie. Out of all the incredible places I visited, three stood out the most, each capturing a different side of Italy’s beauty and leaving me with memories I’ll never forget.
1. Venice
Venice completely amazed me, it’s one of those places that feels more like a dream than a real city. The canals, bridges, and centuries-old buildings made it feel like I’d stepped into a painting. Between the fresh pasta, seafood, and gelato, it was easily some of the best food I had in Italy. I loved watching the city come alive around the water, from locals heading to work by boat to travelers soaking in every view. My favorite moment was gliding through the canals on a gondola. It was one of those experiences you see online and can’t quite believe until you’re living it yourself.

- Explore early or late: Wander the streets at sunrise or after dark when the city is calm and quiet – it’s pure magic without the daytime crowds.
- Skip the pricey gondola ride crowds: Try a traghetto (a public gondola ferry) to cross the Grand Canal for only a few euros, same charm, way less cost.
- Eat where the locals eat: Avoid restaurants near St. Mark’s Square and head to the quieter streets of Dorsoduro or Cannaregio for authentic Venetian dishes.
2. Orvieto
Hidden in the heart of Umbria, Orvieto sits high on a 150-meter cliff, almost appearing to float above the countryside. What makes this medieval gem so special is how seamlessly it blends with the volcanic rock it was built on. It feels like part of the landscape itself. The stunning Duomo di Orvieto towers over the town with its intricate Gothic façade, and wandering through the quiet cobblestone streets truly feels like stepping back in time. Though small, Orvieto’s rich history, breathtaking architecture, and panoramic views make it a must-see stop in central Italy.

- Try the local specialties: Order a glass of Orvieto Classico wine with a plate of truffle pasta, two local favorites you can’t miss.
- Easy day trip from Rome: Orvieto is just over an hour by train; take the funicular from the station straight into the old town for incredible views on the way up.
- Explore underground Orvieto: Don’t skip the Orvieto Underground tour, you’ll walk through ancient tunnels and caves carved into the rock beneath the city.
3. The Dolomites
The Dolomites were hands-down my favorite part of Italy. A place so breathtaking it almost didn’t feel real. Towering peaks, winding trails, and alpine lakes surrounded us at every turn. One of the highlights was hiking up to Lake Sorapis, where the water shimmered in the brightest shade of turquoise I’ve ever seen, framed by dramatic cliffs that looked straight out of a painting. It was surreal, peaceful, and unlike anywhere else I’ve ever been. Seeing early preparations for the upcoming Winter Olympics added an extra layer of excitement to the visit. I left the Dolomites with a deeper appreciation for nature’s beauty.

- Rent a car: Public transport is limited, having your own car lets you explore hidden gems like Lago di Braies and Val di Funes at your own pace.
- Go early: Start your hikes before 9 a.m. to beat the crowds and catch the best mountain light for photos.
- Stay local: Choose a family-run alpine inn for an authentic experience, hearty meals, and incredible sunrise views.
Final Thoughts
Italy gave me so many unforgettable memories, but these three destinations truly stood out the most. From the romantic canals and incredible cuisine of Venice, to the hidden charm and history of Orvieto, and the majestic mountain views of the Dolomites, each offered something completely unique that captured a different side of Italy’s beauty. Every place felt like its own world, Venice with its dreamlike energy, Orvieto with its timeless calm, and the Dolomites with their awe-inspiring natural wonder.
