Halloween in Ireland hits a little differently. In Derry~Londonderry, centuries-old traditions meet glowing streets, larger-than-life performances, costumes, music, and fireworks. And there’s an extra reason to visit in 2026: Derry Halloween is celebrating its 40th anniversary! Here’s how to experience the celebration, learn where its traditions came from, and enjoy some of the city’s best activities without spending a scary amount of money.

1. Discover Halloween’s Irish Origins
Long before trick-or-treating and pumpkin carving, Ireland celebrated Samhain, an ancient Celtic festival dating back more than 2,000 years. Samhain marked the transition from harvest season into winter and was a time when the divide between the living and spirit worlds was believed to weaken.
Bonfires, disguises, gatherings, and other traditions became part of the celebration. Even jack-o’-lanterns have an Irish predecessor: people once carved faces into turnips rather than pumpkins.
Derry~Londonderry brings this history into the present with Awakening the Walled City, where the historic streets become an immersive world of Irish folklore, light, fire, storytelling, and live performances from October 28-30.

2. Explore Derry~Londonderry Beyond the Festival
Halloween may bring you to Derry~Londonderry, but there’s plenty to discover during the daytime too.
Start with the city’s famous 400-year-old walls, which wrap around the historic center and provide some of the best views of Derry~Londonderry. From there, continue exploring some of the city’s most recognizable sights:
- Guildhall: Stop by this striking red-brick landmark known for its neo-Gothic architecture and stained-glass windows.
- People’s Gallery: Walk through the Bogside to see the murals depicting important moments in Derry’s modern history.
- Peace Bridge: Cross the River Foyle on one of the city’s most recognizable modern landmarks.
Save While You Explore
Walking the city walls and exploring many of Derry~Londonderry outdoor landmarks won’t cost you anything. Spend the afternoon sightseeing on foot before heading back into the city center for the evening’s Halloween events.

3. Be There for Derry~Londonderry Halloween’s 40th Anniversary
Derry~Londonderry Halloween celebration started much smaller than the festival you see today. In 1985, a Halloween costume party at a local pub was disrupted by a security alert. Once everyone spilled into the streets in costume, the celebration continued outside.
That unexpected night helped spark a tradition that would grow for decades.
In 2026, Derry Halloween marks 40 years, with celebrations running from October 28 through November 1. Halloween night brings one of the biggest moments of the festival: the Carnival Parade, when performers, dancers, floats, and costumed characters take over the streets. The night wraps up with fireworks over the River Foyle.
Plan Ahead
You can watch the parade and fireworks without buying an event ticket, but expect the city to be busy. Find your viewing spot early and reserve accommodations ahead of time, especially during this milestone anniversary year.
