When it comes to traveling, the thrill of discovery can be worth more than any fancy dinner or a 5 star hotel stay, and while we are not knocking you if you enjoy these things (because let’s be real, who doesn’t?). What we are saying is that traveling doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag and we are here to prove it once again. How? By showing you what we like to call “dupe destinations,” locations that offer iconic experiences without the crowds or the cost. Now let us introduce you to three locations that are stealing the spotlight from their more famous counterparts.

Ho Chi Minh City: The Alternative to Bangkok
Ho Chi Minh City, a bustling metropolis in the heart of Vietnam, emerges as a top contender and as a vibrant alternative to Bangkok. With its sea of motorbikes, colonial architecture, and street food stalls selling some of the best pho and mouth watering banh mis, this city pulses with energy.
While there, dive into the city’s growing café culture. District 1’s narrow alleys hide gems like L’Usine or The Workshop Coffee, where the fusion of French influence and Vietnamese tradition creates a coffee experience like no other. 1 shot of espresso with a pastry please!
But it’s not just about the hustle and bustle; there’s so much to do here too, from the War Remnants Museum to the Cu Chi Tunnels, there’s something for everyone to do that will either be full of fun or full of appreciation for offering a deep dive into Vietnam’s past.
If history hunting is not your thing, we also recommend exploring the city’s waterways with a boat tour along the Saigon River. It’s a serene way to see the city from a different perspective and escape the city streets for a moment to get a glimpse of the developing skyline. Of course as in any location catching a sunset is a sure way to see light paint the whole scene in golden hues. Talk about creating core memories!

Copenhagen: The Cousin of Amsterdam
Copenhagen is often raved about because of the quality of life its residents get to experience, and it’s easy to see why. With its bicycle-friendly streets, canals, and a sea for all things cozy, Denmark’s capital city exudes a charm that rivals Amsterdam’s. We said it! Now don’t come for us. For us, it’s the Danish architecture, sustainability, and food that sets Copenhagen apart making it a perfect location to visit if Amsterdam has been on your list.
While there, don’t miss the chance to explore the city’s design stores. Illums Bolighus and Hay are just a couple of spots where you can immerse yourself in the aesthetic that Denmark is famous for. It’s the perfect place to find a unique souvenir or simply get inspired by what is known as one of the happiest cities in the world.
OR for all of our theater buffs, you can always take a day trip to the nearby UNESCO World Heritage site of Kronborg Castle in Helsingør, just a short train ride away. It is known worldwide as the setting of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”! The stunning Renaissance castle not only offers a dose of history and breathtaking architecture but also provides panoramic views of Sweden. Sounds like a no brainer to us!

Denpasar: The True Heart of Bali
While Bali is no stranger to tourists seeking its pristine beaches and Insta worthy landscapes, Denpasar, the island’s capital, offers a glimpse into the soul of Balinese culture. Far from the surfboards and sun lounges, this city buzzes with local life, markets, and temples. It’s where tradition meets the everyday and can offer travelers like you an authentic slice of Bali beyond the trendy posts we’ve all seen over and over on our feeds.
While in Denpasar, make your way to the Pasar Badung market for a true local shopping experience. Here, you can sample local cuisines, buy some handicrafts to take back home, and soak up the electric vibe that defines daily life in Bali.
Another activity to keep in the books is to attend a traditional Balinese dance performance, such as the Kecak dance, which is often held in temples around the city. These performances are the perfect way to connect with the locals and get first row seats to Balinese storytelling, music, and elaborate costumes. Sign us up!
Although we’ve referred to these destinations as “dupes” they are far from it! In fact we would go as far as to day that they are top tier destinations. And with a little curiosity and a lot of adventurous spirit, can lead to the most rewarding and unique experiences.
So whether it’s the cafe-lined streets of Ho Chi Minh City, experiencing “hygge” in Copenhagen, or the bustling markets of Denpasar, there’s a world of undiscovered gems waiting to redefine your travel bucket list. Now it’s really time to pack your bags, embrace the unexpected, and let these cities show you what you’ve been missing.
