Athens, a name that resonates through history, whispering secrets of legendary philosophers, mighty emperors, and ancient gods. For many of us, our first encounter with Athens was in history class, where we explored the birthplace of democracy and Western civilization.
This time, however, you can go beyond the textbook and into the city where the greats once stood. So, pack your bags and join us on this odyssey as we delve into the heart of Athens, Greece and uncover its hidden historical gems.
In Athens, treasure hunting is not just about seeking hidden riches; it’s an exploration of cultural wealth, a journey through layers of history. Whether you’re navigating the labyrinth streets of Plaka, marveling at the majestic Parthenon which we know you will visit, or seeking out lesser-known ruins (we’ll talk about those here), we promise Athens will be an adventure like no other!
Let’s start with Anafiotika,
Nestled under the Acropolis’s northeastern slope and known as the Island in the city, this tiny neighborhood is a hidden gem. Known for resembling the Cycladic islands’ architecture, it was built by islander craftsmen in the 19th century to resemble their homeland. Although not as widely known as other Athenian landmarks, Anafiotika has grown in popularity. Its quaint streets and traditional houses provide excellent opportunities for all those IG posts and TikTok travel videos.
The houses in Anafiotika are characterized by their small size, whitewashed walls, colorful doors and windows, and rooftop terraces. So while there it might feel a little bit disorienting knowing you are in the city but feeling like you’re somewhere near the ocean. But not to worry as that will quickly pay off with the stunning views you’ll see of the city given the neighborhood’s elevation.

Next, the Roman Agora & Tower of the Winds
Built in the 1st century BC with Roman funding, this market area includes the famous Tower of the Winds, an ancient timekeeping and weather station.
First let’s briefly talk about the Roman Agora which served as the commercial center of the city. It played a vital role in the daily life of ancient Athenians and illustrates the shift from Greek to Roman influence in the city’s urban development. Some notable structures to keep an eye out for include the Gate of Athena Archegetis and the East Propylon.
The Tower of the Winds, also known as the Horologion of Andronikos Kyrrhestes, is an octagonal marble clock tower and is renowned for being one of the best-preserved examples of an ancient Greek timepiece.

Now let’s talk about Kerameikos
We usually wouldn’t put a cemetery on the list, but Kerameikos is often an overlooked historical site. Located in the northwest part of the historical city center, near the Acropolis, its name is derived from the word ‘keramos’, meaning pottery. This area was initially a settlement of potters and vase painters due to the abundance of clay in the region. But eventually it became the principal cemetery of its time and now a tranquil archaeological park.
While there, make sure to get a tour and visit the museum where you will learn about artifacts found at the site plus the variety of burial types and so much more!

Next is a location we wish was still intact, the Library of Hadrian.
This grand library, constructed by Roman Emperor Hadrian, was a cultural hub featuring reading rooms, lecture halls, and gardens.
The library was not just a place filled with scrolls and books (papyrus rolls at the time), it was a multifunctional place that included spaces for lectures, philosophical discussions, and artistic performances. It served as a center for learning and the arts, similar to a university nowadays!

- Athens can be hot, especially in summer, so make sure you carry water during your explorations and drink up! You can even set an alarm to make sure you stay hydrated throughout this trip,

- Don’t let your excitement get the best of you. Even if you’re doing it for the gram, stop and reconsider whether going past a restricted area or willingly destroying something is a good idea. As we always say, respect the historical sites and local customs.
- Public Transport is your friend! Utilize Athens’ efficient metro system to navigate between locations because for one it’s a lot cheaper and two it allows for impromptu exploration without worries about parking.
- Like any good traveler would, indulge in local street food like souvlaki and gyros for an authentic and budget-friendly experience. Of course, if you have a little extra, visit some fine dining restaurants or even rooftop bars to take in the city while sipping on some local wine.
