So, you’ve booked a spontaneous getaway across the pond, but now comes the real challenge: fitting your entire personality into a carry on! Between airports ever evolving rules and airlines charging more for bags than sometimes an actual seat, packing has become a strategic sport. But don’t sweat it, we’re about to Marie Kondo your luggage life and save you space AND money.
Oh and this isn’t your basic “fold your socks and roll your shirts” kind of list (although that is a really helpful tip). We’re here to help you maximize space, dodge airline costs, and still have enough fits to star in your own Euro summer film, no checked bag required.
We are going to hold your hand while we say this, but you don’t need five pairs of shoes for a week trip unless you’re Beyoncé. Remember that your bag is prime real estate. Treat it like it. Especially because international airlines are NOT playing when it comes to luggage weight. Some of them (looking at you, low cost carriers) treat your carry on like a liability.
So Rule #1: Skip the complicated outfits and instead pack versatile pieces you can mix and match. Think in terms of entire looks that work together in different ways. For example, one pair of pants that goes with three tops, or a dress that works as both a beach cover up and a going out look. Look at you being a true fashionista!

Get A Personal Item that Works Hard
While we definitely encourage you to use fanny packs under your clothes to store a couple more items, those things often max out at gum, your wallet, and your phone. This is your chance to cram half your dorm into one TSA approved carry on. Enter the Solgaard Venture Backpack or whichever sleek, pocket-heavy backpack you’ve got on hand.
We’re talking chargers, snacks, a whole skincare routine, a book you’ll pretend to read, and yes, maybe even an outfit change or two. Make sure to choose a backpack with a structured shape and multiple compartments so it doesn’t look overstuffed, even though it absolutely is.

Layers, Layers, Layers!
Okay, this one might sound like a meme but wearing your bulkier items on you saves a ton of suitcase space. We’re talking sneakers, jackets, even cargo pants with oversized pockets. So lean into Travel Core (yes, we just made that up) and stuff your pockets with accessories that would’ve otherwise taken up too much space in your suitcase.
And although you might be a little hot, airport security won’t blink twice at your 6 layer fit, but you will thank yourself when your carry on suddenly has room for those souvenirs we know you’re bringing back from your trip!

Invest in a Smart Suitcase
Let’s talk about smart luggage, the kind that saves your wallet and your sanity. Most airlines let you bring a carry on, but they love to label it “overweight” just to fund their snack cart. That’s where the BEIS Carry On comes through with its weighted handle that literally tells you if you’ve packed too much when the top handle light turns red. Say goodbye to unpacking in a panic at the check in counter while everyone behind you silently judges.
Another great option? The Away Carry On with Pocket. It’s AirTag friendly, so you can easily pop one inside and track your bag from your phone in case it decides to take an unexpected detour to Madrid. Plus, it has a built in battery charger and a padded front pocket for your laptop or snacks. Also worth checking out, the July Carry On Light, which is so featherlight you’ll have extra weight to spare for impulse souvenirs. As you can see smart suitcases equals fewer headaches and more time to vibe.

Swap Your Toiletries
When it comes to toiletries, mini versions of your go to products are the obvious move, but have you thought about solid toiletries? Let us introduce you to bar shampoo, solid perfume, and yes, toothpaste tablets! All surprisingly small and effective.
Switching to these will save you precious space and you don’t have to worry about the liquid rules, or having it explode in your suitcase mid flight.

Pack Like It’s a Puzzle
Last but not least, think of your bag like a game of Tetris. Heavier things go at the bottom (near wheels), rolled clothes in rows, and corners stuffed with small items. Packing cubes can help, but even Ziplock bags will do in a pinch.
If you want to go to the next level, try vacuum compression bags for clothes. Yes, you’ll need to have a little vacuum and a garment steamer, but hey, your suitcase will close, and your weekend looks will slay.
Clearly traveling light requires some time and a little creativity (and maybe a smart suitcase sidekick), but as you can see you CAN keep it cute, compact, and carry on only. With these tips we are confident you’ll achieve your goal to spend your money on memories and not checked bags.
And to keep the savings coming, don’t forget that Scholartrip offers exclusive flight deals your classmates won’t believe but your wallet will root for! Go ahead, book that trip, bend the airline rules, and make those summer memories.
