As the days grow shorter and the cozy vibes take over, there’s one thing on every traveler’s fall bucket list: catching the iconic leaf change. Autumn isn’t just about pumpkin spice lattes (although many of us wish it was), it’s also about witnessing nature showing off its beautiful hues of orange, red, and gold.
Here’s your guide to fall getaways perfect for witnessing the magical leaf change here in the US and abroad. Get ready to rake in those likes and make some unforgettable memories.

Stowe, Vermont
Starting off with the perfect small town where hot cocoa will be your second favorite drink after anything maple. Stowe looks as picturesque as the postcards make it out to be. Think covered bridges, cozy cafes, and mountains dusted in shades of orange and red. It’s the epitome of that soft cottagecore dream you’ve seen all over your social feeds.
And because we know you would want to go full Hallmark movie while there, we recommend hopping on a gondola ride to the top of Mount Mansfield for a breathtaking view of the foliage.
For the adventurers, renting a kayak to glide along Waterbury Reservoir while seeing swaths of trees as you float down will be straight up magical. And of course, if you’re more into staying cozy (we don’t blame you), the town has plenty of local shops selling handmade knick knacks and vintage goodies.
Now when it comes to Vermont, we can’t talk about Fall without mentioning one thing: maple syrup! Stowe is right at the center of this syrupy tradition and it’s home to some of the finest maple syrup in the world! So don’t forget to grab a jar or two while there. YUM!
Lastly, look for off peak accommodation deals by booking your stay mid-week. Airbnb and local hostels often have discounts in October, and you can snag a place that’s super cozy without freezing your wallet.

Kyoto, Japan
If there’s one place that knows how to flex during autumn, it’s Kyoto. This ancient city isn’t just known for its cherry blossoms (which we’ve talked about before), Fall here is equally magical, turning the city’s temples and gardens into radiant works of art. It’s like stepping into a scene from a Studio Ghibli movie!
Kyoto’s most famous fall spot is Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Perched on a hill, this iconic temple offers panoramic views of the city embraced by a sea of autumn colors. For a more peaceful experience, check out the Philosopher’s Path, a quiet walk lined with maple trees that turn red come November. And to finish it off, pair your walk with a cozy cup of matcha from one of the local tea houses. Talk about a perfect fall vibe!
Because Kyoto gets crowded during peak fall season (mid-November), we strongly recommend heading out early to avoid the tourist rush and get those serene, people-free pics. Yes…we know photoshop exists, but there is nothing like experiencing a new city as a local would.
Hear us when we say that getting a Japan Rail Pass for students is one of the best things you can do while there because we know you’re planning on traveling around so why not doing it on a budget? Lastly, don’t forget to stay in a traditional ryokan (Japanese guesthouse) or book a capsule hotel –they’re super affordable, and honestly, part of the Japan experience!

Quebec, Canada
If you’re looking for the European charm without the Euro price tag then look no further because our neighbors from the north got you! This little slice of French Canada brings all the European fall feels, with cobblestone streets, old-world architecture, and food that’ll make you say, “yes, please!” And come autumn, the whole province turns into what looks like a kaleidoscope of reds, oranges, and golds. The best part? You don’t need a plane ticket to Europe to experience it.
After you’ve walked all around Quebec, given its walkability, head just outside the city where you’ll find Montmorency Falls. There you can watch the leaves change at one the most stunning waterfalls in the region. For the full fall experience, take a drive along the King’s Road, which winds along the St. Lawrence River and through picturesque villages bursting with autumn colors. Definitely don’t leave your camera at home for this one!
And since this is Canada, you’ll be surrounded by friendly locals and all the maple-flavored treats you can handle. They are like Vermont in that way, they love their maple!
Now if you would like to experience Fall up close and even hug one of these gentle giants, make a trip to Jacques Cartier National Park for hiking trails that wind through the Canadian wilderness. Sounds like the crisp air and stunning scenery are calling your name! Don’t ignore it.
Clearly, there’s something about watching the leaves change that just hits different –especially when you’re doing it in a whole new country. So whether you’re sipping the best matcha in your life in Kyoto or strolling the quaint streets of Quebec, these spots offer all the autumn feels. And honestly, experiencing fall elsewhere is the kind of magical experience every college student deserves.
So grab your passport, your camera, and take a peek at our exclusive student deals that will have you chasing those vibrant leaves across the globe in no time. If there’s one thing better than fall foliage, it’s discounts to see that fall foliage! Happy leaf hunting.
